I opened my eyes but everything was too dark to see. I could hear Mommy shouting and I was scared. My eyes adjusted to the darkness and I realized we were at Brian's house. That's mommy's new boyfriend. I was sleeping in Tiffany's room. She's Brian's daughter but she's in college now and I've only met her once.
I could hear Mommy shouting at Brian and I started to cry. Brian is the nicest guy Mommy's ever dated and I know what happens after she starts shouting at her boyfriends. The fighting just gets worse and worse until we have to move somewhere and start a whole new life.
I don't know how long they've been dating, but I only met Brian about four months ago. He took me to the roller skating rink, which is my favorite place, ever! Brian even rollerblades and tried to teach me, but I had to hold onto him the whole time and it was kind of awkward. Mommy just sat at a table and watched. She seemed really happy.
Most of the guys Mommy dates are kind of gross. They usually have yellow teeth and wear dirty clothes and smell bad. The last one, Steve, always drank and he would hit my mom a lot. Most of her boyfriends would do that. Sometimes they would hit me, too.
Brian was different, though. He was always clean and smelled kind of good. Not like a perfume or anything, but in a way I can't describe. He has dark brown hair with a beard and a big mustache that always hangs over his lips. I've seen his chest once and it was really hairy, too. He's tall and sometimes he wears glasses. I think he's cute.
He acts different than Mommy's other boyfriends, too. They would usually just sit and watch tv or go outside in the garage. The only time they'd ever talk to me is when we'd all be sitting together eating take out or something. They'd just ask how school was and stuff, but I could tell they didn't care and didn't like me. Mommy would always try to get me out of the room they were in as soon as possible.
Brian pays attention to me. He sits with me and lets me pick what we watch on tv. He wakes me up for school and makes me pancakes sometimes. He helps me with homework and cooks dinner for everybody when Mommy isn't working late. He even lies in bed and reads to me when Mommy can't be home to tuck me in. That's my favorite part of being with him. I like to lay my head on his shoulder and smell him while he reads. I like to pretend he's my dad.
I crept out of bed and to the door, opening it as gently as possible trying not to make a sound. I wanted to hear what Mommy was yelling at Brian. I wanted to hear what was wrong because I actually thought maybe I could fix it. I wanted to stay here with Brian forever. He made it seem like we were a family and I felt safe with him.
"I can't believe this! I can't believe I feel for someone like YOU! What's wrong with me!? Why can't I find a normal man who will love and cherish me? You're disgusting. I can't even look at your face. You've been using me this whole time!"
I didn't understand what she was talking about. She was sniffling and choking on her words like a crazy person. Brian spoke so softly I couldn't hear him, but I could tell he was trying to soothe her with his words.
"No! That's disgusting! It's absolutely not fucking natural, don't even say that! You're sick. You need help. I ought to call the police right now and...”
I heard a muffled shriek and a clatter with a bang. It seemed like Brian had grabbed my mother and possibly put his hand over her mouth to keep her from shouting anymore. I heard more shuffling around and I crept out of my room to peer down the staircase, hoping I might see what was happening.
Brian had his arms around my mother, one of them over her mouth, and she was sitting in his lap. She was struggling, but it didn't seem like she was really trying to get away. He was whispering into her ear and stroking her skin with his nose. Tears were falling down her cheeks. She was shaking her head no, but he kept whispering. He let go of her mouth then and used that hand to stroke her cheeks, brushing away the tears.
"I love you, Laura, you know I do, baby," he said loud enough for me to hear. She shook her head again and said, "If you love me then how could you want her? It's wrong!"
"I want you both. It's biology. It's my nature to dominate. If you want to be with me, then you need to accept that. You are here to make me happy, and in return I will provide for and protect you and your daughter. But as the man, my needs come first. I can find someone else to give me what I'm looking for, but can you find someone to take care of you this way?"
I was so confused. What were they talking about? Was Brian saying he wanted to have another girlfriend but still keep Mommy? I felt really sad for Mommy because she was crying and shaking her head still. I was angry at Brian for hurting her. He was supposed to be different.
Brian took Mommy's chin in his hand and tilted it to look at him. "I don't want to lose you, baby. I love everything about you. Don't make me have to find someone else. Just give me what I need, baby. Tell me you'll let me have anything I want. I could love you forever if you give me everything I want. Tell me I can, baby. Please. I want to hear you say it."
Mommy looked into Brian's eyes for a moment, and then looked down at the ground again. Quietly, almost in a whisper, she said "Ok."
"Ok, what?" Brian asked. "I want you to tell me I can have anything I want, Laura."
So Mommy responded the only way she could, "You can have anything you want."
